The developments in the mechanical sealing industry

Mechanical seals have long been used for various applications in the maritime sector. Over the years, various developments and studies have ensured that more is possible in the field of the dredging industry. With the right knowledge and experience, solutions are created that offer advantages for use in the dredging industry.

The origins of mechanical sealing

The mechanical sealing industry is more than 100 years old, since the first company was founded in 1905 in the USA. Initial developments were initiated by George Cook and used in refrigderation compressors. It was not until 30 years ago that mechanical seals were used in the dredging industry. The main reason for the use of mechanical seals in the dredging industry was the fact that the separation of the lubricating fluids in a bearing housing only became possible around this time.

Selecting the right seal

When it comes to developing seals for the dredging industry, it is important to understand the behavior of the sand-water mixture. After years of research and development, it became clear that in case of a failing seal this is not due to the use of a seal but to the selection of unsuitable materials and technology. When selecting the right seal, it is important to look at: alternating pressures, viscous fluids, cavitation, sand-water mixtures, solvents, Ph levels and lubrication.

Success stories

There are several success stories when it comes to seals in the dredging industry. For example, we recently converted the shaft seals of 2 dredge pumps from a stuffing box to an engineered mechanical seal. Using a mobile scanning device, we designed and manufactured the seal-/quench fluid system, adjusted the pump covers and reassembled the pump for testing in a short period of time. The test was eventually conducted with a booster pump set diesel engine designed for the dredging industry.
