A Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) is mainly used for dredging loose and soft soils such as sand, gravel, silt or clay. One or two suction tubes, equipped with a trailing drag head, are lowered on the seabed, and the drag head is trailed over the bottom. A pump system sucks up a mixture of sand or soil and water, and discharges it into the ‘hopper’.

Once fully loaded the vessel sails to the unloading site. The material can be deposited on the seabed through bottom doors, or reclaimed by using the ‘rainbowing’ technique. The material can also be discharged through a floating pipeline to shore, and used for reclaiming land.
